For all candidates filing at the State Board of Elections: Remember that our office location has changed. We are now located downtown at 430 North Salisbury Street, in the Dobbs Building. For directions and parking instructions to our building, please click here.
The State Board of Elections has compiled all the necessary information for candidates seeking to run for office into the Candidate's Guide to Elections. This document should be the first stop for anyone considering running for office in 2018. You can access the printable version of the Guide by clicking here.
Certain candidates for elected office are covered by the State Government Ethics Act, including the Governor, Lt. Governor, members of the Council of State, Legislators, Justices and Judges, District Attorneys and Clerks of Court. All candidates for these offices must file a 2018 Candidate Statement of Economic Interest (SEI) with the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement/Commission between February 10, 2018 and March 10, 2018. Candidate SEI forms will be available on our websites from February 5, 2018 through March 10, 2018. If you are currently serving in a position for which you are required to file an annual SEI form, you need to file a 2018 Candidate SEI form between February 10, 2018 and March 10, 2018, to fulfill both your candidate SEI filing requirement and your 2018 annual SEI filing requirement. For more information on SEI filing requirements, click here to read our newsletter on the subject.
Candidates seeking to file for the 2018 elections should note the below tables to determine the proper place and date to file as well as the candidate filing fee. To file, a candidate will need to submit a Notice of Candidacy as well as the Felony Disclosure Form (if needed) and their filing fee to the respective Board of Election governing their contest. We cannot accept any of these forms or fees until candidate filing has opened and we cannot accept them after the close of filing.
More information about residency, age requirements, and reporting obligations will continue to be made available under the "Fact Sheets" heading on the left-hand side of this page.
