The North Carolina State Board of Elections curates large amounts of data on state elections and voter registration. With several exceptions, this data is public record and available on our website. NC General Statute §163-82.10 dictates what data is protected information. This includes, but is not limited to: voters' dates of birth, voters' driver license numbers, and any partial or full social security numbers (SSN). This data will never be provided in any reports produced by this agency.
This page serves as a central hub for many of our data sets. Below, you will see links to various reports and aggregations, along with descriptions of what is included with the data. If you do not believe the data you are looking for can be located on our website, you may request additional information by filling out and submitting a Voter Records Request Form to the State Board of Elections by either mail or fax. North Carolina Voter Registration Data
The State Board of Elections maintains a record of voter registrations in North Carolina that can be filtered through many categories. Foremost is our Voter Registration Statistics tool which catalogues voter registration numbers each week and subdivides them into several categories including race, gender, and political party. New reports are run each Saturday.
North Carolina NVRA Registration Data
The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 was aimed at creating new opportunites for citizens - especially underrepresented groups of citizens - to register to vote. The NVRA mandated that voter registration be offered at a wide range of state agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Department of Social Services (DSS). This data tracks the sources of voter registrations in North Carolina, to measure the progress made by the NVRA. The data here ranges from 2004 through 2016.
North Carolina Absentee Voter Statistics
In addition to voter turnout information, the State Board of Elections keeps data files detailing the types and numbers of absentee voters in each election. This includes both absentee-by-mail voters and absentee one-stop (also known as Early Voting) voters. The data stored here covers every election since (and including) the 2000 General Election.
General Election Voter Turnout
Voter turnout is defined as the percentage of registered voters that vote in any given election. The State Board maintains data on voter turnout going as far back as the 1972 General Election, as well as primary turnout data beginning in 1988. The data is subdivided into presidential election years and non-presidential election years, due to the wide turnout discrepency between the two.
2016 General Election Voter Turnout Maps
Using data from the 2016 general election, the State Board broke down voting method by individual counties. These maps show the percent turnout for the various voting methods in each county. The voting methods tracked are: in-person voting, absentee-by-mail voting, absentee one-stop (early) voting, UOCAVA voting, and provisional voting. North Carolina Year-End Registration Snapshot
At the beginning of each calendar year, the State Board of Elections reports the number of registered voters by districts. Registration numbers are compiled by U.S. Congressional District, N.C. Senate District, and N.C. House District. In addition to providing a benchmark, this data is also critical in determining petition signature requirements.
